Girls' Fun - Part Fifteen

[I'm transcribing edited highlights of a diary I kept when I was 15 / 16 years old, in 1985. Index here.]

[For summary of happenings so far, see here]

Mon 1st April, 1985 (Young Clare is 15 years old)

YTY’s 2nd BIRTHDAY PARTY! HOMEFIELD CENTRE, 8.00 - 12.00. TRY AND GET PHILIP TO COME! TAKE SOME BOOZE!

Me and Rachel are now getting on totally well again. It is not tense between us any more. Matthew is no longer coming between us, Thank God.

Went into town in morning and then spent rest of day getting ready for party. Looked great when I set off: fringe looked great (credit goes to hot-brush) but after I’d walked all the way to Heslington against the wind I looked nothing short of a mess. The shoes which Rachel lent me were much too large and kept falling off and also gave me awful backache cos they were too high.
Sally had rung earlier to say she couldn’t come cos of flu and by the time I got there I had a headache and felt queasy and decided I had flu too. Stephen, the other Chris, John, Philip and Rachel were all early too. I was told the other Chris had planned to ask me out but don’t think it was v. true.
For first hour or so felt real fed-up, then knocked the disco lights over and it was too much so I went outside for a good cry. By this time Sally had turned up after all, and everyone was looking for me, and the other Chris tried to go back to my house to look for me but got lost, and Sally rang my house but Thank God didn’t let my mum know what was wrong. Then I returned and panic over.
By this time my make-up was ruined too and my skirt wouldn’t stay up properly cos the belt wasn’t efficient. I then cheered up quite a bit and danced most of time with Sally, John, 2 Rachels and Philip. Then the other Chris asked Sally out but she said No, then Sally fell in love with John and asked him out and he said Yes (!) Then Sally had to go home.
There was no booze, only Punch, so no one was really drunk. By this time I was absolutely besotted with Philip, and (Stupid!) had let everyone know, then Rachel asked him out for me (!) and he said we had too good a friendship and he would go out with me but when (not if, you notice) we broke up our friendship would be over and it wasn’t worth it. Rachel then told me and I rushed off to the loos for another good cry.
Afterwards I saw Philip and he said “You understand what I mean? I just don’t think it would work” - I just nodded and said “Yes.” He avoided me a bit for rest of evening and seemed ever so depressed. I’m really sorry I put him in such an awkward position and think our friendship probably has been spoiled.
Spent rest of evening semi-happy. Danced like mad and made an utter fool of myself. Went home utterly knackered.

Tue 2nd April, 1985

Ached all over last night after dancing and hardly slept a wink. Think I was a bit delirious and there were weird images of the other Chris floating all over my mind and they wouldn’t go away. Felt awful all day today. Rang Philip to ask for recipe for MILK COFFEE. He sounded peeved. Am now in bed with a temp of 102. I feel awful and v lonely.

Wed 3rd April, 1985

Spent afternoon in bed then got up towards evening so Mum wouldn’t think I was too ill. I have a bit of a headache and my glands ache, but that’s all.
Have decided maybe Philip was right.

Thurs 4th April, 1985

Pretended to revise, but watched 2 films and read a book instead. Felt a bit depressed and v. bored. Chris phoned in morning. He was at Stephen’s house. Stephen said hi. We arranged to meet in town tomorrow. Rachel couldn’t come cos she’s going to Billingham with Kirsty. John’s going too - good riddance!
Rang Kirsty and had quite a long chat. She’s been revising all day and every day. Oh dear.
Spent evening watching telly and passing witty comments to and fro wi’ Dad.

Fri 5th April, 1985

Met Stephen, Kerry, Richard, some soppy date called Alison who he’s going out with for some reason (she’s a typical Yorkshire girl), Omar, and Chris. We left Stephen, Kerry, Richard and Alison to their own devices most of the time and just me, Chris and Omar wandered around on our own, chatting. It was really nice and friendly. They’re two great people.
Later there was just me, Stephen, Omar and Chris. Stephen kept attacking me until Omar accused him of two timing; then he kept his hands to himself. He kept trying to pair off me and Chris: he said Chris wanted to go out with me. Me and Chris ignored him, tho, and Chris neither denied it nor confirmed it.

Sat 6th April, 1985

Philip rang this morning: I was delighted! Catherine B had rung him and wanted a banner for a CND demo on Monday.
I met Sally and Rachel in town: apparently Chris had been and gone cos he had to buy some peas (Huh!). Me and Rachel wandered around town for 3 hours (we went in 3 cafes!). We saw Omar on the market and he gave me a grape!
Then I spent the afternoon at Philip’s. We made most of a really good banner and I had tea at Philip’s, went home and spent the evening making a rainbow for the banner.

Sun 7th April, 1985

Easter Day

Went to Philip’s in afternoon and finished banner (it look’s great!) and then played cards and then came home and had argument with Mum and spent evening in room pretending to revise.
Spent whole day eating chocolate at Philip’s and at home.

Ah, I love tweenage Clare. This explains why: "Then the other Chris asked Sally out but she said No, then Sally fell in love with John and asked him out and he said Yes (!) Then Sally had to go home."

More angst, please!

Yes, I liked that bit too.

And don't worry, there is plenty more angst to come. Enough angst to fill your wellies and your mum's weliies too.
