Girls' Fun - First Summary

Regular readers will know I've been transcribing edited highlights of a diary I kept when I was 15 / 16 years old, in 1985. I’m about to post the latest entry, but before I do I thought I’d better do a quick summary for newcomers and those who who have lost track.

In 1984 I was 14. I grew large breasts, joined a Youth Theatre and discovered I was capable of being something other than a frumpy swot. I had my first kiss and my first boyfriend.

By December 27th 1984, which is when this diary started, I was 15 and on to my second boyfriend. Well, sort of. Matthew got a little over-enthusiastic in the canoodling department and we ignored each other for a few weeks. But we didn’t officially break it off. So that Christmas I was thinking a lot about what might happen the next time we met.

But most of the time I was dreaming about Philip, who was one of my best friends but also the love of my life. For two years already I’d been mooning over him, following him around, constantly hoping he might feel the same way. My new year’s resolutions in 1985 were to pass my ‘O’ level exams and kiss Philip.

So far, i.e. by mid February, I hadn’t managed it. But I had got back together with Matthew. And then got offended because he told his friends he was only stringing me along. So I ended it. By phoning him up the day after Valentine’s Day and saying, “Right, I’m not going out with you any more. Bye.”

And then I changed my mind, and wrote him a letter which contained the wonderful line, “if you want to go out with me then I’m asking you out again - if not, I’m not.”

And that’s where we’re up to. Waiting to see how Matthew will respond to the letter.

If you want to read all the entries so far, and also the little descriptions I obligingly wrote in the back of the diary of all the boys in my life, go here. Otherwise hang on for an hour or so, and I'll post the next thrilling instalment.
