Girls' Fun - Part Seven
Hmmm. Actually, I'll split it in two. Half now, half later in the week.
[I'm transcribing edited highlights of a diary I kept when I was 15 / 16 years old, in 1985. Index here.]

[For week beginning 4th Feb, see here]
Mon 11th Feb 1985 (Clare is 15 years old)
MOCKS -> Get the day off school (no exams).
I rang Sally this evening; she says on Sunday John told Matthew off for treating me bad; Matthew didn’t agree.
Yesterday, after I went off down an alleyway to cry and returned home, I was v. upset and rang Matthew with some mundane excuse and we agreed quite friendlily to see each other on Thurs, so I don’t know really.
Apparently no CND tomorrow so rang Philip’s dad to cancel. Couldn’t tell if Philip was back or not but don’t know if I care as I STILL haven’t received a postcard.
Tue 12th Feb 1985
MOCKS -> Get the afternoon off: Morning = PHYSICS
POSTED MY V-CARDS AT EXACTLY 6.30 THIS EVE.
Had Physics exam in morning. Was V awful.
Went almost straight home at dinnertime, got changed and went into town. Told Mum was having lunch in town. Wasn’t, of course, but have already spent this weeks dinner money. Went into stationer’s shop wi’ gorgeous boy but he wasn’t there. Must just be a Saturday job. Felt a bit of a twit.
Bought an NME. V. trendy. First time I’ve read one. V. sophisticated. A bit over my head, I thought, but much more interesting and involved than a Jackie.
Still didn’t get a post-card but saw Philip on way out of school this aft and he apologised cos he never sent me one! But he’s brought some chocolate back for me and he’s thinking of coming to meeting tomorrow. Lovely!
Wed 13th Feb 1985
MOCKS -> FRENCH, GEOGRAPHY & MATHS
V-day tomorrow! Can’t wait!
Saw Philip at end of school and he gave me the choc: swiss and praline-filled: v. nice!
Rang John when I got home: I waited a long time after his mum answered and heard a major family row going on: either his mum or sister was crying and when he came to phone he either had a BAD throat or was crying but he wasn’t very communicative and says he’ll let me know about whether he’s coming to drama tomorrow.
Went to joint CND / Labour Socialists meeting tonight. Was v. interesting but Nick didn’t turn up and neither did Philip but Catherine B did and we had a good old moan together about how awful Philip is.
Tried rolling my own cigarette with Dad’s old stuff* while parents were out. Smoked it outside and then used gallons of toothpaste and mouth wash to clear away effects. Cig was v. strong and am still reeling. It made me feel drunk!
Spent hours this evening working out which bus Matthew will be on tomorrow on way home from school, cos am going to get on the bus to see him tomorrow afternoon.
Thurs 14th Feb 1985
MOCKS -> morning: GERMAN. afternoon off. Enjoy yourself!
[this bit had been written some weeks in advance] VALENTINE’S DAY! Must send Philip a card; if I haven’t found someone else, or although I have found someone else DEPENDING ON CIRCUMSTANCES.
Post was late so thought I hadn’t got any cards but then it arrived: I got 2 cards: one from Matthew (all it said was “C’est Moi" but I knew it was from him) and one from Sally**, signed with a question mark.
German exam was pretty awful but it’s my own fault for not revising.
Spent hours doing hair etc for drama. Didn’t bother meeting Matthew off bus cos didn’t have time. Wore a pink bow in hair. Matthew didn’t seem partic. pleased to see me, although he waited for me, but he hardly even said Goodbye at end. Chris and Stephen told me Matthew was thinking of packing me and only using me. WAS V. MAD. CRIED ALL WAY HOME. HAVE DECIDED TO PACK HIM TOMORROW.
[Editor’s notes:
* “Dad’s old stuff" was some ancient pipe tobacco: Old Holborn in a round yellow tin.
** Sally was my best friend at the time, but has mostly been edited out of this diary to protect her privacy (she reads this blog!)]
