Girls' Fun - Part Three

Mon 14th Jan 1985 (Clare is 15 years old)
Not a v. interesting day. Went out on field at dinnertime and snowballed. Got Philip a few times but we both soon lost interest and moved on.
Tue 15th Jan 1985
We weren’t allowed out at break because of unruly and dangerous snowballing and also supposed bullying of lower years, but it’s the opposite: They bully us! We can’t get away from them!
Kirsty missed out on registration and assembly this morning ‘cos she was upset and crying again about her parents. Apparently last night they forbad her to go to Mac’s house (he rang last night and invited her) cos of what they might get up to, and they gave her another lecture on how Mac is beneath her station, and agreed to being snobs, and even seemed proud of it! So I wrote her a Cathy / Claire letter in Biology, giving her lots of my psychological advice. She seemed to cheer up a bit.
Walked home with Philip, and he practically ignored KATIE LONG for the sake of walking with me! ONE UP ON HER!
Went to CND. Saw gorgeous boy called Nick. V. NICE!
Wed 16th Jan 1985
Not a v. interesting day. Apparently Helen F knows somebody who knows somebody who’s fucked a dog!
In afternoon, I had Community Care. Went and helped at an Old People’s Home. 1st we talked to two really nice old ladies who like to sit by the door where they can watch the world go by, then we took everyone their tea, then we washed up, set the tables for tea, washed up again, and went home. Time flew!
It’s 4 wks tomorrow till V-Day. I can think of 10 boys I have been involved with recently: Philip, Harris, Dicky, Nick, Anthony, Matthew, Chris, John, Eddie, Ross*. But I don’t really think any of them are at all likely to send me a V-card.
Thurs 17th Jan 1985
Today nowt much happened at school, except Kirsty was in a mood with me. She’s getting fed up with me, I think.
Went to CND, but didn’t have time to do much, cos had to go to drama. Nick (gorg bloke at CND) seemed v. friendly, but in light of what happened at drama, probably won’t be much use to me.
I have been apprehensive about Drama all week, ‘cos it would be 1st time I saw Matthew since The Babysitting. He was a bit late, so I thought he must be not going. We mostly ignored each other all session, and then smiled at each other a bit. But John has told me he was ill all Xmas, and that’s why he didn’t ring, and he still wants to go out with me, but was afraid I wasn’t speaking to him. What shall I do? I’d just about managed to forget him and put him behind me and he can’t have been ill for 6 weeks! But he’s meeting John, Chris and co on Sat so I’m going to go too and have a ‘quiet word’. I don’t really know that I want to go out with him again, cos he’s too randy and it worries me, and anyway wot about Philip? And there’s Nick now, too. What the hell should I do?
Fri 18th Jan 1985
Saw Philip today. He was friendly as usual. Have been worrying today about what to do about Matthew. Why have I got such a big mouth? Today I told Kirsty AND Rachel AND Sally the full details about The Babysitting. Even how S was in the room and had to repeat what I said about having my period! I can never keep anything to myself.
Sat 19th Jan 1985
Meet Matthew outside St Peter’s, 2.00.
Overslept so missed piano lesson, thank God.
Bought a new pair of tight stretch jeans but clocks in Coney Street wrong so was late to St Peter’s and there was no-one there, so went home. Rang Matthew earlier and got him to go to Drama early tomorrow cos I wanted to talk to him. He said he wanted to talk to me too.
Sun 20th Jan 1985
Went to Drama and met Matthew early. M had no satisfactory explanation about his 6-week silence but in the end we decided to go back out with each other all the same. After Drama, me, Matthew, Stephen and Chris went to chippy. They kept going on about sex, and Chris said Matthew said I was on the pill and we’d had it off at The Babysitting (joke? I hope so), and then Chris asked me if the song (by Madonna): Like A Virgin applied to me!
Went home and watched telly. Did no work. So now I’m going out with M. I feel happy but I don’t really think I am.
*[Editor’s note] When I said “involved with” I could have meant anything from “erotic stuff” on a sofa to spotting them at a CND meeting and thinking they were gorgeous...
